I need to produce a BMP file with the artwork of traces and holes in the pads on the same bitmap. Holes should be of the background colour. Additionally can the converter be invoked in the background from the command line or from other front end program?

Yes, the GerberLogix program can be used to produce an integrated artwork from Gerber and Excellon files. It allows for the production of a BMP file with the artwork of traces and holes in the pads on the same bitmap. The holes will be of the background color. Additionally, the converter can be invoked in the background from the command line or from other front-end programs.
The RS274D are standard Gerber files in plain text that contains X and Y coordinates. You can practically open them with any text editor and supported RS274D application. I've found an application that can successfully read RS274D files. It's called ViewPlot and available for download on the application's page at Software Informer. Press the big green download button to initiate the transfer of the file. Of course, GerberLogix can be used as well.
To save an edited gerber file in GerberLogix 3.0, you can typically use the "Save" or "Save As" option in the software's menu.
